Rhythm of the Road
As we walk, we establish a certain pace, guided by our energy reserves and their fluctuations. Yet, our steps and gait align with a rhythm shaped by the terrain—whether hilly, covered in reeds, or soft with sand. Almost imperceptibly, our breath synchronizes with the gentle sequence of wind waves, quieting in response to the rhythmic steps of a companion.**
The Guest
Our movements carry a rhythmic and melodic structure. Without realizing it, we shift our posture—relax, tense, advance, retreat, avoid, and manipulate objects. We step into the outer world, engage, then return to the base point of home to restore ourselves. Our heartbeat attunes to the rush of excitement or the pulse of looming danger, and at night, it settles into rhythm with the ticking of a clock.***
Impressions
The bedspread brushes against the sheet, producing a faint rustling sound. Someone sighs, coughs softly; another hums quietly, while elsewhere, a sob lingers—perhaps of a child, perhaps of an adult. Sound gathers space around itself. A lullaby anchors the presence of a sleeping infant. They are here, present. The soft chirping of crickets, the rhythm of footsteps, the crackle of twigs; hands moving through the air—all merging into the landscape’s flow. Further beyond lie the earth, the light, the air, and the sky—elements that remain open, boundless, stretching into vastness and depth.(Inspired by Alphonso Lingis’ essays in “The First Person Singular”)
